  • Brands, Photography, Music, Logo, Design, All
sk8face - documentary

It traces the evolution of skateboarding from simple boards with roller skate wheels attached to skateboards that are displayed in museums around the world.

The story spans over 70 years, starting in the 1950s when skateboards were still ordinary boards, until today, when they are considered important works of art.

The film gives the viewer a glimpse through the eyes of legendary artists and skaters who share their personal experiences of the past and present of the art of skateboarding as they continue their creative journey. These elements help the viewer to understand the history of skateboarding, its connection and influence on the contemporary art world, and introduce today's independent artists and cultural influencers. Skateboarding is now a global phenomenon.

Legendary artists, skaters and influencers from the world of skateboarding

The documentary features various legendary artists, skaters and influencers from the world of skateboarding who have shaped the history of skateboarding with their contributions. They include:

  1. Steve Caballero - Professional skateboarder, artist and punker, known for his long influence on skateboarding and the art of skateboarding.
  2. Natas Kaupas - One of the pioneers of “street” skateboarding, he has had a significant impact on shaping contemporary skate culture.
  3. Shepard Fairey - Artist and designer, best known for his work “Obey” and the “Hope” poster for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. In the film, he discusses the influence of skateboarding on wider pop culture.
  4. VCJ (Vernon Courtlandt Johnson) - Legendary skateboard graphic designer, best known for his work for Powell Peralta, where he created some of the most iconic graphics in skateboarding history.
  5. Ed Templeton - Artist and professional skateboarder who has transformed the perception of skate culture through his art and photography.
  6. Mark Gonzales - A pioneer of contemporary street skateboarding who has influenced the artistic and cultural scene with his unique approach.
  7. Jim Phillips - Artist known for his iconic skateboard graphics for Santa Cruz Skateboards, including the famous “Screaming Hand” graphic.
  8. Christian Hosoi - A legendary skateboarder whose style and charisma have had a significant impact on skate culture and the art of skateboarding.

The roles of these people in the film are varied: some share their personal stories and experiences, others discuss the impact skateboarding has had on the wider culture, and still others reveal the background behind the creation of some of the most important works of art in the history of skateboarding. Through their eyes, the film shows how the art of skateboarding has evolved and continues to shape world culture.

Skateboarding and punk

“SK8FACE” is also linked to punk, as punk culture has had a significant influence on the development of skateboard art and culture. Punk and skateboarding were strongly intertwined in the 1970s and 1980s, as both expressed rebellion, independence and alternative lifestyles. This subculture influenced the aesthetics of skateboard graphics, music, clothing and the general atmosphere explored in the film.

“SK8FACE” highlights how punk values such as the DIY approach, creativity and resistance to the mainstream have shaped and inspired skateboarding art. The film examines how this subcultural connection has contributed to the creation of a unique identity for skateboarding, reflected in the design of boards, posters, clothing and even the music that accompanies skateboarding.

Both punk culture and skateboarding have played a key role in shaping one of the most influential subcultures of the modern era, which is one of the main themes of the documentary “SK8FACE”.
